The Browncoat community is probably our best bet for finding a social media savvy, science fiction devoted ally. I suggest passing the following along to any browncoat or browncoat organization you know about:

As a longtime Firefly and Serenity fan, I remember the agony of trying to follow Firefly through all the schedule changes and pre-empting on Fox all those years ago. I also remember the deeper pain of its premature cancellation. Now, another great science fiction show is facing a premature cancellation. Eureka has been a staple in the Syfy lineup and brought entertainment to me and millions of others. What makes its cancellation so painful is that it comes not from an evaluation of the show, or the ratings, but from a simple financial motive. According to NBC/Comcast, the show wasn’t profitable enough. It wasn’t losing money, apparently, just not making enough money.

If the show had been floundering in the ratings or bleeding money, I could understand the decision. To cancel a well-written, family-friendly, science fiction show simple because the profit margin wasn’t high enough seems like a disregard for the core audience of the Syfy Network, science fiction fans everywhere, and anyone who appreciates finely crafted television. Fortunately, the fans of Eureka have the chance to be mighty and show the executives down at Comcast and NBC that we’ll support our show with our wallets, as well as our words. We’re planning a Buy Eureka DVDs Day to coincide with the release of the Season 5 DVD on July 12, 2002. Our goal is drive up the sales figure on the Season 5 set to help show that the show can still be profitable.

What we’re asking from you is that you help us spread the signal that Buy Eureka DVDs Day is happening. Help us get the word out to everyone in the ‘verse that might want to help save a show that is worthy of support. Of course, if you’re fan, please join us on July 12 and buy a copy of Season 5. We will be flooding the executive offices of Comcast and NBC with emails informing them of our purchases, then with pictures of our purchases, pleas on behalf of this fine television series and, if all goes well, hundreds of pounds of “Vinspresso” coffee beans. Great science fiction shows happen too rarely and get cancelled too often. You understand this better than any group of people and your dedication allowed Firefly to rise from the ashes as Serenity. Help Eureka rise from the ashes and prove, once again, that when fans band together in a common cause, the impossible can happen.
